A Whale of a Time in Los Cabos

Every winter, migrating gray and humpback whales make an epic trek of over 6,000 miles from the cold waters off Alaska to the tranquil lagoons of the Sea of Cortez where they give birth in the warm, sheltered waters. Home to one of the world’s richest marine ecosystems, the thriving diversity of sea life in the Sea of Cortez prompted legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau to dub this “The World’s Aquarium.”

From the months of December through March, whale watching in Los Cabos is a magical experience, allowing visitors to catch unforgettable sights of these magnificent creatures breaching and spouting in the waters off of Cabo San Lucas. It’s not uncommon to spot a mother whale with a playful, curious youngster following closely alongside. Other marine mammals spotted in the Sea of Cortez include common and bottlenose dolphins, blue whales, fin whales, minke whales, orcas and pilot whales.
