Fall Diving Highlights & Video from the Sea of Cortez

Recently, our company president, Don Hirschaut, and our CFO, Michelle Hoffman, had the chance to experience some wonderful fall scuba diving in the Sea of Cortez. Don says, “the autumn months are an excellent time to scuba dive and snorkel in Los Cabos, with warm waters and excellent visibility. We had 84° water and visibility exceeding 100 ft. during our trip.” Here are some highlights:

One of the highlights of this dive trip, says Don, was the opportunity to scuba dive with whale sharks near La Paz with the expert team of Cabo Expeditions. “We counted 18 whale sharks in total,” explains Don. “We had the chance to dive with up to 4 juvenile whale sharks in close proximity at a time, ranging from 20-35 feet in length.” These large filter feeders are gentle creatures that also happen to be the largest fish species in the world. Mature individuals can reach lengths of over 40 feet. Whale sharks feed on plankton, krill, fish eggs, fish larvae and small squid. The warm waters of the Sea of Cortez near La Paz are one of the best spots in the world to view these majestic creatures. Cabo Expeditions leads outstanding excursions.

Another outstanding experience was diving at Cabo Pulmo, a national marine park in the east cape area of Baja California Sur. An easy day trip from Cabo San Lucas, Cabo Pulmo boasts one of North America’s only living coral reefs. “This is a great place to snorkel or dive,” says Don. Among the species you can experience are: colorful hard coral, tropical fish such as Moorish idols, rays, groupers, jacks, pufferfish, parrotfish, sea lions, sharks and many others. Don explains, “Cabo Pulmo is truly a treasure and one of the world’s finest ecotourism destinations for lovers of marine life.”

While Cabo Pulmo and La Paz are must-visit spots for dedicated scuba divers, there are also excellent diving spots just minutes from the bustling heart of vibrant Cabo San Lucas. “We had the chance to head out with the outstanding team of Manta Scuba Diving to enjoy excellent diving around Pelican Rock and Neptune’s Finger in the waters just outside of Cabo San Lucas.” Among the highlights of diving in this area was the opportunity to experience a night dive. “A night dive is incredible,” says Don. “We got to see captivating bioluminescence, sea turtles, yellow cup corals extending to feed, giant sea hares, sharks, worms and shrimp and lobsters emerging.”

Another excellent spot to experience the sea life of Los Cabos is Chileno Bay. Many snorkeling excursions depart the Cabo San Lucas Marina daily to this beautiful bay situated in the Corridor area of Los Cabos.
