Diving in Cabo: Don’t Miss These Top Spots
Diving in Los Cabos, Mexico is an incredible experience. World-renowned for the incredible abundance of marine life, diving in Cabo San Lucas is exceptional due to the confluence of the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean and the warmer waters of the Sea of Cortez at the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Scuba divers can see an awesome variety of sea creatures thriving in these rich waters, from colorful tropical fish to large pelagic species.
Luckily, you don’t have to travel far from Cabo San Lucas proper to experience outstanding diving. Don Hirschaut, CaboVillas.com President, shares some of his recent diving photography, video and top spots in Cabo and along the Corridor for diving.
Directly offshore from Cabo San Lucas next to Land’s End, divers can visit a number of great dive spots within an easy 5-10 minute boat ride. The magnificent underwater landscape offers rocky outcroppings and the dramatic phenomenon known as the sand falls featuring breathtaking cascading flows of sand along the walls of the submarine canyon. Divers may see many underwater species including eels, nudibranchs, coral, seahorses, angelfish, lobsters, sea turtles, sea lions, parrot fish, rays, puffer fish, snappers, groupers – and many more!
In the waters of Cabo San Lucas Bay, some of the top diving spots include Pelican Rock, Neptune’s Finger, the Sand Falls, Land’s End and the North, Middle and South Walls. These diving sites are situated along the bay-facing side of the rock formations of Land’s End and are a quick boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina with numerous tours offered by certified diving companies, including night dives.
Along the Corridor linking the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, several spots offer memorable diving. Two of the most popular spots are Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay. Chileno offers a thriving protected reef about 100 yards offshore from the beach with colorful fishes, sea turtles, manta rays, urchins and sea fans. At Santa Maria Bay, the shallow reef is full of species like moorish idols, porcupine fish, groupers and more.
Many diving tours are available throughout Los Cabos, for both certified beginners and experienced divers alike. Diving certification courses are also available in Cabo San Lucas. For a special day trip within driving distance of Cabo San Lucas, the spectacular coral reef at the Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve is not to be missed.
